Maryville University head men’s basketball coach Marc Stricker announced that Buzzy Caruthers has joined the Saints coaching staff as an assistant coach. Caruthers comes to the Saints after two seasons at Lincoln University. Prior to his stint in Jefferson City, he worked at NCAA Division I St. John’s University.
“I am extremely excited to welcome coach Caruthers to our staff and Maryville University,” Stricker said. “I have known Buzzy for a long time and have followed his career very closely. His energy, infectious personality, and passion for student-athlete development on and off the floor will pay dividends in all facets of our program.”
In his first season at Lincoln, Caruthers helped the Blue Tigers record 17 wins and a second-consecutive berth in the MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The Blue Tigers won nine conference contests and defeated Lindenwood in the first round of the MIAA tournament. In the quarterfinals, LU challenged eventual-national champion Northwest Missouri before narrowly getting eliminated 80-76.
Caruthers has also coached at Butler (Kan.) Community College, Chipola (Fla.) College, Dodge City (Kan.) Community College and Barstow High School and Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in Kansas City. At Barstow, Caruthers assisted in the formation of a new culture of winning. He helped lead the team record a program-record 24-win season, and Barstow remains a prep basketball power in the Kansas City-area.
At the junior college level, Caruthers helped Butler record 19 wins and advance to an NJCAA regional semifinal. During his stints at Dodge City, Chipola and Butler, he coached 23 players who went on to play at the NCAA Division I or Division II level. Caruthers has played a major role in recruiting and developing nine players who earned all-conference honors.
In addition to his high school experience, Caruthers coached with Mokan Elite, one of the top grassroots basketball organizations in the country. He coached and sent more than 30 players to the NCAA Division I ranks while with the program. Caruthers has trained numerous professional players, including Alec Burks, Kyle Weems, Ben Richardson and Domoniqe Morrison. Through various coaching stops, Caruthers has coached more than 50 players who have gone on to play at the NCAA Division I or Division II levels.
A native of Kansas City, Kan., Caruthers won two high school state championships at Sumner Academy. He graduated from Hampton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance in 2006.
